WHY STEM + LIBERAL ARTS?

STEAM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. We define STEAM as an interdisciplinary approach to problem-solving with a strong emphasis on human needs. At the core of STEAM thinking, there is a human-centered approach. This human-centered approach is the love for humanities or more specifically, the empathy required to understand others’ needs.

People often think that A stands for Arts in the acronym, STEAM. However, there is so much more in A. The A in the extraordinary STEAM leaders at Stanford and in Silicon Valley extends far beyond the traditional, normative definition of Arts in STEAM. They bring a human-centered approach to their work. They are empathetic problem-solvers who have a strong desire to positively transform the human experience.  The solution we offer is to empower the next generation of women students with STEAM.

We want to emphasize how important the “A” is in our program. A is more than just Arts. It is the love for humanities, the empathy that allows us to become more insightful problem-solvers. Combined with the knowledge necessary to become impactful STEM thinkers, the A enables us to transform us into innovative STEAM thinkers.

STEAM IN JAPAN

According to the PISA test results, which measure the academic ability of the students in the world, Japanese high school female students are amongst the top students in the world in math and science subjects. However, the percentage of female students who select technical or science majors at university falls to the lowest level.

The STEAM field is an interesting field for girls. More girls enter the STEM field, more they can make a distinctive discovery and achieve innovative development.

In order for more Japanese girls to enter the STEAM field with courage and confidence, it is important not only to get good results in school, but to understand the design thinking approach and incorporate it in their early age.

SKY Labo’s design thinking summer workshop offers the environment where girls can learn easily under the optimal teaching methods. They can earn the good sense of innovation, science and engineering with fun.

Let's give it a try this program this summer.
